Scandihoovian hat

IMG_0469.JPG

Gauge: 2 stitches per inch
Needles: Size 13 DPNs (I used a circ, and it was painful because it was too small for magic loop).
Yarn: Blue Sky Alpaca Bulky Natural, 1 skein (45 yards, with plenty leftover for a nice, optional pom pom)
Size: 1 year (your mileage will TOTALLY vary. My nephew is 4.5 months and giant and this hat just fits him).
Notes: My increase was knit-into-the-stitch-below. It doesn't really matter which you use.

C/O 6 (I used Emily Ocker's Circular Cast-on). Place marker at beginning of round.

Row 1: *K1, m1, repeat from *
Row 2, and all even rows: Knit around
Row 3: *K2, m1, repeat from *
Row 5: *K3, m1, repeat from *

Continue until you have 30 stitches total, ending with an even row.

Next row: Increase 4 stitches evenly.

Knit plain until the whole hat measures 6.25".

Next row: K7, wrap and turn (w&t)
Next row: P7, w&t
Next row: K to 1 stitch before wrapped stitch, w&t
Next row: P to 1 stitch before wrapped stitch, w&t

Repeat until you have one stitch unwrapped, ending with a WS row.

Next row: K4, picking up wraps, K13, w&t
Next row: P7, w&t
Next row: K to 1 stitch before wrapped stitch, w&t
Next row: P to 1 stitch before wrapped stitch, w&t

Repeat until you have one stitch unwrapped, ending with a WS row.

Bind off loosely, picking up wraps as you get to them. Add braids at the end of the ear flaps. Add pom pom to the top, if that's your cup of juice.

Wow, what a cute hat - I actually tried to make it, and there is a mistake - d'oh!
In the even rows, it should say purl - not knit! - This way you get the stockinette stitch as per the photo.
But reallllllly cute - thanks so so much for sharing it!!

Cute hat, having fun making it! Thank you for sharing. @ Anonymous- this is knit in the round, not flat. No mistake in the pattern.

I would love to make this hat but my babe is 10 months old, medium sized head. I am new to knitting and was wondering how I would increase this pattern to fit her? Thanks!

For a larger hat!:

Start the pattern as follows:
C/O 6 (I used Emily Ocker's Circular Cast-on). Place marker at beginning of round.

Row 1: *K1, m1, repeat from *
Row 2, and all even rows: Knit around
Row 3: *K2, m1, repeat from *
Row 5: *K3, m1, repeat from *

And keep increasing until it's the circumference of your daughter's head (you can measure her head, and multiply the circumference by your stitches per inch), then increase a few stitches until your total stitches are divisible by 4.

Then just knit until it's *slightly less than* a good hat size (you can pop it on her head as you go), then put a marker at a quarter of each of the stitches (so if you had 100 stitches you'd put a marker at 0, 25, 50, and 75).

Over 25% of the stitches do a short row ear flap as follows:

Next row: K[25% - 1], wrap and turn (w&t)
Next row: P[25% - 1], w&t
Next row: K to 1 stitch before wrapped stitch, w&t
Next row: P to 1 stitch before wrapped stitch, w&t

Repeat until you have one stitch unwrapped, ending with a WS row.

Then knit down the edge of the ear flap you just created, picking up wraps as you go, knit across the next 25%, and then repeat the wrap and turn on the next 25%.

Then knit down that ear-flap edge, picking up wraps, and bind off all stitches.

I just made this hat with some of my chunky hand spun and it turned out great! I added a mohawk up the middle and it's adorable. Thank you for writing it down for us.
